Welcome to the 24th edition of Circular Digest!
The world feels quite scary right now. Sending my thoughts to anyone affected by the forest fires in Europe, floods in Nepal and China or earthquakes in Colombia and Indonesia.
It is times like this where I get reminded of why I throw my soul into what I do. We know our human-induced climate change and environmental destruction is increasing the scale and severity of natural disasters. Every subscriber or business I influence and collaborate with to reduce their environmental impact, sometimes doesn't feel like much in the face of these disasters, but is my small way of trying to leave a positive mark on the world.

Research: For the first time, the impacts of plastic pollution have been seen at a population level in wild animals. Sable shearwaters are some of most plastic-polluted animals in the world, with parents known to feed their chicks waste after mistaking it for food. The devastating impacts of this mean many chicks experience dementia-like symptoms and suffer from a fibrotic disease known as βplasticosisβ. New research has revealed that plastic pollution is affecting this species on a population level. This research found that chicks being fed just 0.5 grams of plastic reduces the chances of a shearwater chick returning to breed by 12%, but as many as 20% of chicks have at least a gram of plastic or more. The researchers labelled birds with more than two grams of plastic as βthe walking deadβ, as these animals are unlikely to ever make it back home.

Kayleigh's Thought Leadership: The first obligations of PPWR entered into force on the 12th August 2026. This introduced PFAS limits in food-contact packaging (for the first time in EU history), heavy metals thresholds (carried over from PPWD), a duty to reduce hazardous substances of concern and a register with EPR schemes in Member States. Policy: The Africa Circular Economy Facility, a multi-donor trust fund administered by the African Development Bank Group, is expanding its reach to five additional nations. Angola, Liberia, Madagascar, and Senegal will develop their own circular economy roadmaps, identifying priority sectors, aligning institutional efforts, and tailoring strategic guidelines to their local productive structures. The four countries in the first cohort - Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Ethiopia - successfully identified priority sectors for circular action; construction, forestry, agriculture, plastics, textiles, manufacturing, energy, and water management.

educate stakeholders on the difference between biodegradability and compostability. All compostable items are biodegradable but not all biodegradable items are compostable!

Navigating Microplastics and Future-Proofing Operations
In modern society, plastic has become inescapable.
Despite its convenience there is a mounting global crisis that businesses can no longer ignore: the proliferation of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs).
Less than 5mm in size, these tiny particles are formed either through intentional manufacture (such as industrial plastic pellets known as nurdles) or through the fragmentation of larger plastics.
Today, MNPs are ubiquitous, detected in oceans, Himalayan glaciers, the Arctic, air, food, and drinking water.
While there has been a rise in consumers trying to make "simple swaps" to limit plastic exposure, individual behaviour change can only do so much to reduce this systemic issue.
Single-use plastics are deeply embedded in global systems. Systemic change must be driven by the businesses across the value chain, which control the production, packaging, and logistics that dictate material flows.
Addressing this crisis is not merely an issue of corporate social responsibility, it's a critical strategy for mitigating regulatory, reputational, and operational risks for businesses.
The Triple Threat: Environmental, Health and Social Impacts
To understand why microplastics represent a severe business risk, let's look at their far-reaching impacts:
Ecological Damage
Beyond visible litter, MNPs cause devastating ecological damage. For example, maritime cargo accidents have spilt huge amounts of nurdles, which are ingested by marine life. This causes choking, internal physical trauma, and starvation, bioaccumulating up the food chain.
Plastic contamination has also become a major, overlooked threat in organic recycling schemes. A study published in Nature Food revealed that while diverting food waste from landfills reduces GHGs emissions by 89%-99%, the presence of plastic packaging can contaminate the organic compost produced. Even with separation technologies operating at 99% efficiency, diverting packaged food waste can increase microplastic pollution in agricultural soils, leaching up to 20,000 tonnes of microplastics into US soils annually.
Human Health Risks
MNPs enter our bodies through ingestion, inhalation, and daily contact. Scientists have detected them in lungs, blood, faeces, carotid arteries, heart, brain, liver, reproductive organs, and maternal placentas. Studies link MNP exposure to cardiovascular disease, decreased fertility, and autoimmune issues.
The chemical complexity of plastic is also highly toxic. Plastics contain more than 16,000 chemicals, including known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, and endocrine disruptors (such as phthalates, bisphenols like BPA, and PFAS). Up to 70% of a plastic itemβs weight can consist of these chemical additives - unbound - which leach easily into human tissue. These chemicals are associated with increased risks of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and decreased fertility in adults, as well as prematurity, stillbirth, and neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Globally, the annual health costs associated with exposure to just a few well-studied plastic chemicals are conservatively estimated at $1.5 trillion.
Cancer Alley is an 85-mile stretch along the banks of the Mississippi River, where people live on the frontlines of ~200 fossil fuel and petrochemical operations. This is the largest concentration of these facilities in the Western Hemisphere. The population of these areas are 90% Black, compared to the US national average of 13.6%. Cancer Alley also has the highest risk of cancer from industrial air pollution in the US, x7 the national average.
The impact of plastic pollution is unevenly distributed, disproportionately affecting workers, pregnant women, children, and marginalised communities located near extraction, production, and waste disposal facilities.
The Strategic Business Action Plan: From Compliance to Leadership
As regulators, consumers and investors demand accountability on MNPs, businesses need to shift from reactive waste management to proactive, upstream mitigation.
Here are five concrete strategies that businesses can implement today:
Implement Reuse and Refill Systems: Traditional recycling is only one part of the solution, and it shouldn't be the first step. To address pollution at its source, businesses should look to design toxic-free reuse and refill systems. By replacing single-use packaging with durable, returnable containers, you can cut your plastic and carbon footprint, reduce chemical exposure and build deeper customer loyalty.
Redesign Packaging Portfolios: The less plastic footprint, the less microplastic leakage. Businesses should work to eliminate unnecessary plastics. Upstream packaging redesign and reduction removes the hazard entirely.
Secure Logistics and Prevent Pellet Loss: Preventing the escape of raw materials is vital. Getting Operation Clean Sweep certified by implementing strict containment and spill protocols for nurdles during transit can prevent disastrous environmental spills and costly legal liabilities.
Establish Pure Organic Waste Streams: Businesses in food service, hospitality, and retail should ensure organic waste is separated properly from plastic waste. Avoiding heavily packaged foods and providing clear guidance for employees to prevent microplastic contamination of organic streams.
A Plastic-Free Future
Navigating the transition away from plastic can be complex. Material sciences, supply chain logistics, circular business models, and evolving global regulatory frameworks all play a part.
However, this systemic risk can also be transformed into a powerful competitive advantage.
Reducing financial liabilities, increasing access to green loans, minimising reputational risk. Protecting public health, the environment and your bottom line.
